Fashion is an act of defiance in Papicha, a feisty first feature from Algerian director Mounia Meddour. Nedjma (Lyna Khoudri), aka Papicha, is a student of French language and culture at Algiers University. She frequently escapes an oppressive campus with best friend Wassila (Shirine Boutella), applies some lipstick, a stylish dress and heads for a night on the town. This is Algiers in the 1990s and the rising Islamist tide is being felt everywhere. Papicha decides to stage a fashion show in opposition to all those who are trying to control and limit the lives of her fellow students. – Glasgow Film Festival
